The palm oil industry continues to face the need to improve productivity and efficiency amid rapid advances in digital technology. With extensive plantation areas and complex operations spanning upstream to downstream activities, the utilization of data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly important in supporting smarter, more measurable, and sustainable plantation management.

As one of Indonesia’s largest palm oil producing provinces, Riau has an estimated plantation area of approximately 3.4 to 3.8 million hectares, with annual production exceeding 9 million tons. The scale of the industry has further driven the need for technology that can help increase productivity while strengthening operational efficiency.

However, industry players continue to face challenges in monitoring extensive plantation areas, managing complex operational data, and obtaining timely information to support decision making. These challenges mean that the industry’s needs are no longer limited to data availability, but also to how data can be processed into faster and actionable insights.

These issues were among the key focuses at the Sawit Indonesia Expo & Conference (SIEXPO) 2026, held from August 6 to 8, 2026, at SKA Coex, Pekanbaru, Riau. Carrying the theme “Collaboration, Innovation, and Resilience in the Palm Oil Industry,” SIEXPO brought together industry players, government representatives, and technology providers to showcase innovations supporting the digital transformation of the plantation sector.

To address this need, CBN presented CBN Sky powered by Starlink and Fiberstar, a connectivity service based on Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology. The solution enables companies to access high speed, low latency internet in locations not yet covered by fiber optic networks, allowing operations, IoT devices, monitoring cameras, drones, and AI systems to remain optimally connected across diverse geographical conditions.
